でも私の本当の姿は、真面目な留学生。（笑）
今まできちんと留学についてお伝えしていなかったので、
ここで一体どんなことをしているのかを、
証拠をかねて、ご紹介させていただきます〜。

まずは、ハイテク時代を象徴するかのようなこの授業。

これは、私のMac。こう見えて授業中。
オンラインクラスです。
なぜ現地にいてオンライン？
私の理由は座学の先生との相性が悪かったから、
こちらに変更したのですが、基本的にオンラインクラスは、
海外にいる学生や、他の授業との時間的な兼ね合いが付かない学生、
または人前に出るのが嫌な学生、などが利用します。

今回私が取ったオンラインクラスは、
四苦八苦していたポリティカルサイエンス。
多分、そのクラスによってやり方は様々だと思いますが、
私の取ったクラスの場合、まずオンラインで宿題や課題等が出ます。
その他に、決まった時間にネットにアクセスして、
授業を受けるという仮想クラスもありました。
クラスの場所は、チャットルーム。

先生もどこからか、（というか、アメリカ本土から）アクセスして、
その日のテーマや質問をダダダダ〜っと打ち込んできます。
それに答えていく訳ですが、なにせ、学生は若者。
みんな打ち込み早い早い。しかも英語。
パソコンの前で凝固していたのはいうまでもありません。（笑）

まあ、たまに答えないと、と思って何か打ち込むのですが、
自分の発言が、誰かの質問の後にポストされたりして、
なんだか訳のわからないことに。
ということは他の人の発言も順番メチャクチャに表示される訳です。
英語にハンデがある私には、時々お手上げ状態のこともありました。

この他に、クイズやエッセイの課題もネットを通して出ます。

クイズは、正誤選択形式でした。

先生に質問がある時はメールで。
いい経験でしたが、孤独〜。

さて、前学期はこの他にライティング（否照明）の授業もとりました。
クラスは1200。
1000番台は基礎レベルなので、
これはそれほど難しいクラスではないはず。
…と思ってましたが、最後にどっさり課題をくれて、
大変な思いをしました。
課題というのは、このクラスの場合「読んで書く」が基本。

ちなみに私が今回書いた物の例はこちら。
これから留学しようとお考えの方、
どこの大学でも必ずエッセイの授業はあると思うので、
こんなのばっかり書くことになると思います。
これは（なぜか）谷崎潤一郎の「陰影礼賛」を読んで書くという課題。
先生によっては、フォーマットとかうるさく直されますが、
この先生は、何を感じたかを書け〜という人だったので、
フォーマットなどはあまり基本にそっておらず、
ほとんど感想文です。
文法は家庭教師センターにてチェックしてもらいましたが、
どこまであっているのかわかりません。（笑）
英語や留学に興味のある方、流し読みをどうぞ。
興味のない方はぶっ飛ばしてください。

Darkness may have given us philosophical minds. Darkness also had enlarged our intelligence before we got out from the shadows into the light. Today, especially in developed countries, people live in well-lit circumstances even in the nighttime. The lifestyle with lights may be one of the unavoidable developments that people would have created somehow. However, Junichro Tanizaki says in his essay, “In Praise of Shadows,” because of the conveniences of modern life, people may have been losing their cultures, imaginations, and beauty. His opinion would be true. Since the world has been developed, being a well-lit convenient world, we see the same things everywhere, via “McDonaldization,” or “Americanized” societies. Our well-lit life may have created the same equal life, in other words, boring life, in our societies. Thus, not seeing the darkness would have made people forget thinking about their cultural uniqueness, which is related to their own origins; people used to see their own worlds inside or through the darkness.
In darkness, there may be other worlds. If I were in the darkness, I would start thinking about myself, the universe, and the meaning of life. In 2006, after the earthquake happened near the Hawaiian Islands, people lost electric power for more than twelve hours on Oahu. During the daytime, I enjoyed the unusual situation. However, after the sunset, as everywhere became darker and darker, I started thinking about the darkness. I was sitting in the dark, doing nothing but thinking. Darkness was like mercury. It clung to me. I was surrounded by some power that I could not see. I felt that I was crushed by the darkness; there was something next to me in the dark. Also, I was imagining about life in a developing country, on an isolated island, and in a cave as a caveman. Then suddenly, the power came back. That moment was like I was forced to wake up. My mind was still floating somewhere as I was dreaming, however, my senses were so sensitive. Therefore, when I saw my room, I was surprised that the room was so small, and also I realized the noises of electricity, refrigerator and fan, which they had been there always. In the darkness, I was traveling in my mind, using senses that I usually do not need to use in the light. Darkness pushes us to use our imagination.
As Tanizaki says, if we live naturally, feeling the changing of the light and spending time in the movement of shadows in the house, people may be able to feel the atmospheres which may improve our creative minds more; people may be able to find other aspects of the object in the shadow. For example, Tanizaki wrote about his feelings of lacquerware decorated in gold, which usually has a picture in two colors, black and gold. He says that if a lacquerware were in the light, people would not feel its deep world. It may look too showy. However, if a lacquerware were in a shadow, people would be able to see its beauty in the sheen. People may see their own new world in there. This idea, “aestheticism,” was the philosophy that Tanizaki found our life should be based on. For instance, Tanizaki says that the original art of Japan, such as the No play, has beauty in the combination of the light and dark. He watched the No play in the shadowy light. This dimmer light situation boosted the skin color and textures of the actors. The audience would imagine and feel that the actors were more sensual and voluptuous. I agree with this. This gives us the idea that the stage is very special, even a sacred place. If the stage is in the bright light, we may not be able to enjoy the art; we would not see much beauty there. Light and shadow create beauty. The darkness stimulates our senses.
However, because Tanizaki was a Japanese man of the Meiji and the beginning of the Showa eras, his viewpoint was based on the ideas of men. During this time, men were more important than women. Japanese society was based on male chauvinism; men had the say over their lives and families. Therefore, I, as a Japanese woman of the 21st century, see some selfish ideas in his aestheticism in his writing. Even if Tanizaki says that he agreed with using the modern lifestyle, for example the bathroom, he persisted to build his toilet in the old-fashioned Japanese way. He chose using camphor wood for his toilet floor. Then, I wondered, “Who cleans there?” Tanizaki wiping the floor with a damp cloth is hard to imagine. His wife must have done that. Furthermore, he seemed to like using “a wooden ‘morning glory’ filled with boughs of cedar.” Who changes the cedar? Woman. If someone could live “beautifully,” the life would be wonderful. However, someone has to take care of that. The role often has been woman. This might have been one of the reasons that Tanizaki changed wives three times.
Living beautifully is important for everyone. Thus, as Tanizaki mentioned, the idea that people find beauty in shadow would be the same as one of the ways that people find their own ideas of beauty through intelligence and imagination; if someone can find a new world in the darkness, the finding would be his or her original and essential idea. For example, Tanizaki saw darkness even in the candlelight. This finding would sound unnatural for many people. However, Tanizaki saw darkness in the light, and this finding stimulated him. I assume that he could find this situation, because he always had been thinking and trying to find his own beauty in his daily life. After he realized this finding, his imagination would have leaped to the next level. This idea may be connected to intelligence, which in turn is human.
After I read “In Praise of Shadows,” I realized afresh that I am surrounded by stimulus. If I look around, I may see my friends, the beautiful Hawaiian scenery, or artificial objects. These may sound as if that they are completely different things. However, now, I would be able to say that there is a common importance. Even if the object is an organism, a landscape, or manmade things, the fact of what we see does not matter. The important idea is what I feel and what I can find and get from the view. I may find the solution of my current problem on the surface of the water in my glass. I may be able to see my future in the darkness in the corner of my room tonight. We are living with our own philosophies. Once people realized this fact, we will not be able to stop imagining. This may create a great new artist as Junichiro Tanizaki. “I do not ask that this be done everywhere,” but perhaps we may be allowed at least one moment when we can take off sunglasses that we are wearing and make it hard to see the darkness “and see what it is like without them.”

5月半ばに始まったこの学期。
ライティングの授業では、この他に、エッセイもうひとつ、
プレゼン、中間試験、リサーチペーパーがありました。
というわけで、先週は息絶え絶えだったのでございます。

でもこの先は、授業も難しくなるだろうし、
もっときつくなるのは目に見えてますが、
半分くらいの年の子たちも頑張っているので、
ここはひとつ踏ん張らねば〜。

また明日から授業が始まりますが、
次回は最初から気を引き締めていこう！
（ともちろん前学期のはじめにも決意してましたけどね。）

現代的な授業。でも孤独になりそう(^▽^;)
すべてが英語ですからお手上げの時があるのはつらいですね。私だったら精神的に落ち込んでしまいます・・・

英文の技術マニュアルはよく読みますが授業と違い、誤りがあっても笑ってごまかせますが_(^^;)ゞ
この英文は技術マニュアルと違い難しい・・・

何事もあきらめるのは簡単。
これからも大変でしょうが、頑張ってください。

途中まで読んでましたが、頭痛くなるので止めました(´Д｀;;)
旅行に行っても文法無視の手振り身振りいれての単語並べて
すませてますから・・・

一見すごそうに見えるこのエッセイも、
よくよく読むと基本はったりです。
日本にいたときに仕事で文を書いていた経験が役立ちました。
その頃も、自称「はったりくん」でしたので。（笑）
こんな状況に陥っている私ですが、
日本での学生時代の英語の成績は中の中、
うっかりすると中の下でした。
なので、文法・発音まるでダメ。
ああ、もっと勉強しておけばよかった…。

さすがにpopokiさんには到底及びませんが、その昔は多少文章も書けたんですが・・・最近はめっきり。

オンラインクラス、これはまだドイツでは極めて限られたものです。研究テーマによって、遠隔地（たいてい外国）の別の研究者と合同でゼミをやる、なんてときにはたまにあるようですが。とても興味深く読みました。
